The npm account `atool` was compromised and used to publish 631 malicious versions across 314 packages, including @antv/g-plugin-annotation. A threat actor compromised the npm account atool and launched an automated attack publishing 631 malicious versions across 314 npm packages in a 22-minute burst. The @antv/g-plugin-annotation package was among those compromised.
Each malicious version includes a preinstall hook that executes a 498KB obfuscated Bun script. This script exfiltrates sensitive credentials including AWS keys, GitHub PATs, npm tokens, GCP service accounts, Azure credentials, Kubernetes service account tokens, SSH keys, Docker auth configs, database connection strings, Stripe keys, and Slack tokens. Exfiltration occurs via the GitHub API to attacker-controlled repositories following Dune-themed naming patterns (e.g., harkonnen-melange-742).
Beyond credential theft, the malicious code establishes persistence through multiple mechanisms: CI/CD workflow injection (a GitHub Actions workflow named Run Copilot that dumps all secrets via toJSON(secrets)), AI agent session hooks, and a system daemon named kitty-monitor.
The attack was identified by multiple security sources including Amazon Inspector and Google Open Source Security, confirming the malicious nature of the compromised packages.

Remediation
- Immediately revoke all credentials (AWS keys, GitHub PATs, npm tokens, GCP service accounts, Azure credentials, Kubernetes tokens, SSH keys, Docker auth configs, database credentials, Stripe keys, Slack tokens) that may have been exposed on systems where malicious versions were installed
- Remove all malicious versions of @antv/g-plugin-annotation and other affected packages from npm; audit npm account security and enable 2FA
- Audit CI/CD workflows for the injected `Run Copilot` workflow and remove any unauthorized GitHub Actions workflows
- Search systems for the `kitty-monitor` daemon and remove it; audit system processes and startup configurations
- Review git commit history and repository access logs for unauthorized changes or exfiltration
- Monitor attacker-controlled repositories with Dune-themed names for stolen credential usage
- Update to patched versions of affected packages once available and verified clean
