The npm package @gocortexio/npmgremlinbox-cc-by-sa-2-1-jp contained malware that grants full system compromise to attackers. Any computer with this package installed should be considered fully compromised and all secrets and keys rotated immediately.

A malicious npm package, @gocortexio/npmgremlinbox-cc-by-sa-2-1-jp, was published and distributed via the npm registry. The package contained malware capable of achieving full system compromise on any computer where it was installed or executed.
According to the GitHub Security Advisory (GHSA-x637-pr99-2972), systems with this package installed should be considered fully compromised. The advisory recommends immediate rotation of all secrets and keys from a different, uncompromised computer.
While removal of the package is advised, the advisory notes that because the malware may have granted full control of the affected system to an outside entity, there is no guarantee that package removal alone will eliminate all malicious software that may have been installed as a result of the initial compromise.
The incident was disclosed on 2026-07-20 via GitHub's advisory system.
