A malicious npm package named @gocortexio/npmgremlinbox-cc-by-nc-sa-2-0-uk was published to the npm registry. The package contained malware that provides attackers with full control of any system on which it is installed or running.
According to the GitHub advisory, any computer with this package installed should be considered fully compromised. All secrets, keys, and credentials stored on affected systems should be rotated immediately from a different, uncompromised computer.
While the package should be removed, the advisory notes that because full control of the computer may have been given to an outside entity, there is no guarantee that removing the package alone will remove all malicious software resulting from the installation.
The incident was disclosed on 2026-07-20 via GitHub's advisory system.
