An attacker distributed over 900 malicious packages via PyPI, including the ypcodestyle package, as part of a coordinated supply chain attack. The compromised packages contained code that installed malicious browser extensions on infected systems.\n\nThe malicious extension targeted users' clipboard functionality and cryptocurrency wallets, replacing legitimate wallet addresses with attacker-controlled addresses to redirect cryptocurrency transactions.\n\nThis incident was identified and documented by Checkmarx and credited to the OpenSSF's malicious-packages repository (MAL-2023-2464). The attack demonstrates the risk of typosquatting and compromised legitimate-looking package names on public package repositories.
