- yfinanceeMalicious package distributed on PyPI
A large-scale malicious package distribution campaign targeted PyPI, with the attacker publishing over 900 malicious packages. The yfinancee package was among those distributed as part of this campaign.
The malicious packages installed browser extensions that performed clipboard manipulation and cryptocurrency wallet address replacement attacks. This technique allowed attackers to intercept and modify cryptocurrency transactions by replacing legitimate wallet addresses with attacker-controlled addresses when users copied and pasted them.
The campaign was identified and documented by the OpenSSF's malicious-packages project (MAL-2023-2454), which tracks confirmed malicious software supply chain incidents. The incident has been cataloged and is no longer active on PyPI.
