A malicious package named yfinacne was distributed on PyPI as part of a large-scale attack campaign. The attacker distributed over 900 malicious packages through the Python Package Index targeting developers and end users.
The malicious code in yfinacne and related packages installed browser extensions that performed clipboard manipulation and cryptocurrency wallet address replacement attacks. This allowed attackers to intercept and redirect cryptocurrency transactions by replacing legitimate wallet addresses with attacker-controlled addresses when users copied and pasted them.
The incident was identified and documented by the OpenSSF's malicious-packages repository (MAL-2023-2452), indicating coordinated detection and disclosure of the broader campaign.
