A large-scale malicious package campaign distributed over 900 compromised packages via PyPI. The yfiance package was among those affected and contained malicious code.\n\nThe malicious packages installed browser extensions that performed clipboard manipulation and cryptocurrency wallet address replacement attacks. This allowed attackers to intercept and modify cryptocurrency transactions by replacing legitimate wallet addresses with attacker-controlled addresses.\n\nThe incident was identified and documented by the OpenSSF's malicious-packages repository (MAL-2023-2447). The attack targeted users installing these packages from PyPI, with the malicious extension executing in the browser context of affected systems.
